Bring Them Back

February 18, 2009 - Bruce Crawford
A thing I would like to see come back to the Mountain State is small rest stops like the ones we use to have outside Brooklyn and just south of Fish Creek going toward Moundsville.

It has always been nice when traveling to stop at these small rest stops to take a break and stretch your legs. There are a lot of people who come to our state and I belive we need to show our West Virginia hospitality.

Not just in New Martinsville, but throughout the state we travel and the old rest stops are gone. People just don’t drive on interstates all the time. The entire state is beautiful and we need our small rest stops for visitors to stop and see the sites.

I know that our state put a halt to the rest stops because it was costing a lot of money. However, I believe we can find money to take care of them. Hey, let’s make people that get benefits work some at these places for their money. Plus how about the youths that have done some bad things and need community hours? Or how about using the convicts that go out and cut the grass? They can spruce up the place just as well as along the highways. Also, how about school projects that kids can get involved in and help take care of these places as well?

This is just a thought; I realize this when I travel the state not just in cars, but as a bike rider too. There should be a place to stop and relax and do what nature calls without having to stop at a restaurant.

It would be nice...but somewhat dangerous on the highways today. What makes them safe is the visibility. What makes them very dangerous is the proximity to the highways. Vandalism can be expected on any public property. However, you must also feel safe.

If a bike trail or rail to trail system every fully develops these stops will be nice along the path. It will help bring back the hey day so sorely missed.

It would be nice to have the rest stops again. Its a shame that people are so irresponsible that they destroy property and things that are meant to bring joy to others. When we travel now in our state we have to stop and find a business that will allow public restroom use.

i think it's a terrible idea, the locals use them for consuming alcohol and perpetuating the species.
